Magical Ingredients

There is something comforting about reaching for a warm, aromatic herbal chest rub when you want a little extra care.

Mullein Chest Rub brings together four beautiful botanicals traditionally associated with respiratory and soothing herbal preparations: Mullein, Peppermint, Lavender, and Pine Needles. Infused into a nourishing oil and combined with beeswax, the finished balm creates a soft, aromatic preparation that can be massaged onto the chest, upper back, or feet as part of a comforting self-care ritual.

This is an herbal preparation for comfort and aromatics—not a treatment for respiratory illness.

The Herbs

Peppermint

The cooling quality of menthol gives peppermint its familiar relationship with heat and congestion.

Menthol activates cold-sensitive receptors in the body, creating a powerful sensation of coolness even though peppermint doesn’t literally lower tissue temperature.

That cooling, aromatic quality is one reason peppermint has long been included in preparations intended to provide a refreshing sensation and a feeling of respiratory comfort.

Lavender

Lavender brings a soft, floral aroma to this chest rub.

Traditionally valued for its calming and soothing qualities, lavender can make an herbal preparation feel especially comforting when incorporated into a quiet evening self-care ritual.

Its aromatic nature also complements the sharper scent of peppermint and the resinous character of pine.

Mullein

Mullein has a long history in traditional herbalism, particularly in preparations associated with respiratory and chest comfort.

The leaves are soft and velvety, and mullein has a gentle, earthy character that pairs beautifully with more strongly aromatic herbs.

In this preparation, mullein is included as part of the infused herbal oil, bringing its traditional herbal qualities into the finished balm.

Pine Needles

Pine needles contribute a fresh, forest-like aroma to this chest rub.

Their aromatic volatile compounds give pine its characteristic scent and make it a natural companion to other strongly aromatic herbs such as peppermint and lavender.

There is something especially grounding about the scent of pine. It brings the feeling of walking through the woods right into your apothecary.

Mullein Chest Rub Recipe

Ingredients

● ½ cup dried mullein leaf

● 2 tablespoons dried peppermint

● 2 tablespoons dried lavender

● 2 tablespoons dried pine needles

● 1 cup carrier oil

● 2 tablespoons beeswax pellets or grated beeswax

You can use olive oil, jojoba oil, or another skin-friendly carrier oil.

Important: Use thoroughly dried plant material when making an infused oil. Fresh plant material introduces water into the oil and can increase the potential for spoilage.

Making the Herbal Oil

  • Place the dried mullein, peppermint, lavender, and pine needles into a clean, dry, heat-safe jar.

  • Pour the carrier oil over the herbs, making sure they are completely covered.

  • Infuse the herbs using your preferred herbal oil infusion method.

For a gentle heated infusion, place the jar in a water bath and warm it over low heat for several hours. The oil should be warm but should not be allowed to fry or scorch the herbs.

You can also make a longer cold infusion by allowing the herbs to steep in the oil for several weeks in a cool, dark location.

  • Once the infusion is complete, strain the herbs through a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth.

  • Press the herbs gently to recover as much oil as possible.

Turning the Oil Into a Chest Rub

  • Measure 1 cup of your infused oil.

  • Add the infused oil and 2 tablespoons of beeswax to a heat-safe container.

  • Warm gently in a double boiler or water bath until the beeswax has completely melted.

  • Stir well to combine.

  • Pour the mixture into clean tins or small glass jars.

  • Allow the chest rub to cool completely and solidify before placing the lids on the containers.

The finished balm should be soft enough to scoop with your fingertip while still holding its shape.

How to Use

Massage a small amount onto the chest or upper back as part of a comforting herbal self-care ritual.

You can also massage a small amount onto your feet or hands and enjoy the aroma as you breathe normally, because this preparation contains strongly aromatic herbs; a little goes a long way.

Avoid applying it to broken, irritated, or sensitive skin.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind

This recipe contains aromatic botanicals, including peppermint and pine, which may irritate sensitive skin.

  • Always perform a small patch test before applying a new herbal preparation more broadly.

  • Avoid contact with the eyes, nose, mouth, and other mucous membranes.

  • Keep away from children and pets.

  • If you are pregnant, nursing, have a respiratory condition, or are making this preparation for a child, consult an appropriate healthcare professional before using aromatic herbal preparations.

This chest rub is intended for external use only and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease. Seek appropriate medical care rather than relying on an herbal preparation.
