To understand why trauma-sensitive yoga works, it helps to understand how trauma affects the nervous system. When a person experiences a traumatic event, the autonomic nervous system shifts into survival mode. The sympathetic branch activates the fight-or-flight response, flooding the body with adrenaline and cortisol. In some cases, if the threat is inescapable, the dorsal vagal branch of the parasympathetic system triggers a freeze or shutdown response. For many trauma survivors, the nervous system gets stuck in one of these survival states long after the threat has passed. The body continues to respond as though danger is present, leading to symptoms such as chronic muscle tension, shallow breathing, digestive problems, difficulty sleeping, emotional numbness, and heightened startle responses. Over time, this state of constant activation can contribute to conditions like PTSD, anxiety disorders, depression, and chronic pain. Trauma-sensitive yoga addresses these patterns directly by working with the body rather than trying to override it through willpower or verbal processing alone.

Trauma Sensitive Yoga

Trauma can send your brain into overdrive. You might find yourself constantly on guard and unable to relax. Trauma sensitive yoga can help you focus on what’s going on in that moment and recognize what’s going on in your body. It also can help you focus on your breath. When your mind is racing, your muscles are tense, you’re always on edge, you don’t feel like yourself - and you don’t feel like you’re safe. Trauma sensitive yoga is practiced in a safe space with me, who will respect your boundaries. I can help you learn how to control and manage what your body and mind are going through. As you combine movement and breath, you will start building back your  mind/body connections. I can also help you understand and tolerate the sensations you’re feeing so you no longer feel like a stranger in your own body.

Yoga Trapeze

Yoga trapeze helps create natural traction within the spine allowing it to lengthen and pull apart (instead of squishing it together). Yoga trapeze is the most natural form of inversion therapy that lengthens the space between each vertebra, supporting and assisting the body in deeper stretches, building core and upper body strength through various movements. Being inverted gets you upside down, revering the blood flow, sending fresh oxygen to your brain, leaving you feeling invigorated and inspired.

One of the most interesting things about Yoga Trapeze is the fact that it's a blend of disciplines. It's a newer type of yoga that mixes traditional yoga poses with pilates, along with the use of a hammock and some of the healing arts. Yoga Trapeze can vary from very easy to more moderate. Your body is supported by a hammock and helps suspend you from the ceiling. It allows you to move your body into positions that would be impossible from the ground. It can allow your muscles to stretch and lengthen, and decompress your spine.
