What Is Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese practice that is often described as a form of energy work. The word Reiki is commonly translated using the Japanese words rei, meaning something like “universal” or “spiritual,” and ki, referring to life energy or vital energy.

But what does that actually mean?

For someone who has never experienced Reiki, the idea of energy work can feel unfamiliar. Some people approach Reiki through a spiritual lens. Others experience it as a quiet opportunity to slow down, become still, and pay attention to their body. Some people simply appreciate having time set aside to rest and receive.

There isn’t necessarily one way to understand or experience Reiki.

A Practice of Presence

During a Reiki session, a practitioner creates a quiet space where the recipient can rest while the practitioner works with Reiki according to their training and tradition.

Depending on the practitioner and setting, Reiki may be offered with the practitioner’s hands placed lightly on or just above different areas of the body.

The recipient remains fully clothed.

Rather than asking you to perform something, Reiki offers an opportunity to simply be present.

You may notice warmth, coolness, tingling, heaviness, lightness, relaxation, emotions, thoughts, or very little sensation at all. Your experience may also change from one session to another.

There is no particular sensation you need to have for a Reiki session to be meaningful.

Reiki and the Idea of Energy

Energy is a central concept within Reiki, but it is important to recognize that people use the word in different ways.

In science, energy has specific meanings that can be measured and studied.

In traditional and spiritual practices, energy can refer to something quite different, such as a life force or subtle energy.

When we talk about Reiki, it can be helpful to remain curious rather than assuming that every sensation has a specific meaning.

You don’t have to decide exactly what you are experiencing.

You can simply notice.

Reiki Isn’t About Forcing an Outcome

One of the things I appreciate about Reiki is the invitation to step away from the need to accomplish something.

There is nothing you need to prove.

You don’t have to be able to meditate.

You don’t have to empty your mind.

You don’t have to know how to relax.

You don’t even have to know exactly what you believe about energy.

You can simply come as you are.

That can be surprisingly unfamiliar in a culture that often teaches us to measure our time by what we accomplish.

Sometimes having permission to stop doing and simply experience can be meaningful in itself.

Reiki and Choice

Receiving Reiki should never mean giving up your autonomy.

You can communicate what you are comfortable with, ask questions, request changes, or decide that something isn’t right for you.

A Reiki practice can be gentle while still honoring boundaries.

That idea of choice is important throughout my approach to wellness.

Whether we’re working with plants, movement, meditation, or Reiki, I don’t believe you need to hand over your ability to listen to yourself.

Instead, these practices can become different ways of developing that relationship.

A Beginning, Not an Answer

Reiki doesn’t need to be understood as an answer to every question about the body, mind, or experience.

It can simply be one practice among many.

A way to slow down.

A way to become still.

A way to notice.

A way to receive.

And perhaps, for some people, a way to reconnect with themselves.

Sometimes the most useful place to begin isn’t with having all the answers.

It’s with becoming curious about what you experience when you slow down enough to listen.
