Gathered in Sunlight: Where Summer Shows Her Magic

Summer has a way of giving generously.

The garden is full, the days are long, and the herbs seem to appear almost faster than we can gather them. Leaves, flowers, and blossoms that have spent the spring growing beneath the warmth of the sun are ready to be harvested, dried, infused, and transformed into something we can continue to enjoy long after summer has passed.

There is something beautiful about working with herbs this way.

We aren’t simply making a preparation—we are carrying a little piece of the season forward.

The summer herbs have given us their color, fragrance, texture, and plant wisdom. Through infused oils and simple preparations, we can preserve some of that abundance and create something useful for the months ahead.

There is a little magic in that.

The sunlight becomes a flower.

The flower becomes an oil.

The oil becomes a salve.

And summer finds a way to stay.

Two of the salves I love making from this seasonal abundance are Wounded Wildflower Salve and Moonlit Meadow Salve.

Wounded Wildflower Salve

For tending places that need care

This salve brings together several plants that have become meaningful allies in my herbal practice.

The foundation is made with St. John’s wort, mugwort, and calendula infused oils, brought together with beeswax to create a simple salve that can be kept on hand as part of an herbal self-care practice.

There is something especially lovely about making this preparation in summer. St. John’s wort and calendula are bright reminders of the season, while mugwort brings its own earthy, mysterious character to the blend.

The name Wounded Wildflower speaks to something larger than simply tending to an injury.

Wildflowers don’t ask permission to grow. They find the cracks, reach toward the sunlight, bend with the weather, and continue becoming.

Sometimes we are much the same.

Healing isn’t always about one isolated part of ourselves. Sometimes our experiences live in the body, in our emotions, in our memories, and in the ways we move through the world. Tending can be an invitation to slow down, reconnect, and offer ourselves a little more care.

For tending places that need care

  • 5 oz St. John’s wort infused oil

  • 1 oz Mugwort infused oil

  • 2 oz Calendula-infused oil

  • 1 oz Beeswax

  • Essential oils, if chosen

The preparation is intentionally simple. The infused oils carry the plants into the salve, while beeswax gives the finished preparation its texture and staying power.

It is another example of why I love herbalism so much: a handful of summer plants can become something we can continue working with throughout the seasons.

For quiet minds and dreamy nights

The second salve feels like summer in a completely different way.

Chamomile, mugwort, Lavender, and Calendula come together in infused oils to create a preparation inspired by quiet evenings, warm nights, and the slower rhythm that summer can invite.

Chamomile and lavender bring their familiar aromatic qualities, while mugwort has a long history of association with dreams and nighttime practices. Calendula adds another beautiful summer flower to the blend.

There is something almost magical about a meadow after the sun has disappeared.

The flowers close their faces toward the night. The air becomes still. The familiar landscape takes on a different character beneath the moonlight.

That feeling is what inspired Moonlit Meadow.

  • 2 oz Chamomile-infused oil

  • 2 oz Mugwort-infused oil

  • 2 oz Lavender-infused oil

  • 2 oz Calendula-infused oil

  • 1–2 oz Beeswax

  • Essential oils, if chosen

I love thinking about this preparation as a way of carrying the feeling of summer into the quieter parts of the year.

The herbs have spent their season growing in the sunlight. We gathered them, infused them into oil, and transformed them into something that can become part of an evening ritual.

A little herbal preparation.

A little time to slow down.

A little reminder that rest is part of the rhythm, too.

The Summer That Stays

One of my favorite parts of herbalism is learning to notice the seasons.

Spring gives us tender greens and new growth. Summer gives us flowers, aromatic plants, abundance, and long days filled with opportunities to gather. Autumn begins to ask us to preserve what we’ve grown and gathered. Winter invites us to slow down and work with what we’ve carefully prepared.

These salves are part of that cycle.

The plants aren’t just ingredients on a list. They represent time spent outside, observing, harvesting, preparing, and learning.

There is beauty in knowing where our herbs came from.

There is beauty in making something with our own hands.

And there is beauty in allowing the gifts of summer to continue supporting our everyday rituals long after the garden has gone quiet.

Perhaps that’s part of the magic; we gather what the earth offers, we slow down enough to notice, we transform, and somehow, a little piece of summer remains in our hands.

This is one of the things I hope to share through Rooted Soul Apothecary Botanical Healing; it's not simply recipes, but a deeper relationship with the plants around us.

Because sometimes herbalism begins with something as simple as noticing what is growing, and then asking,

What can I create with this?
